Nicholas Assheton
The ashes of the Hon. Nicholas Assheton were buried in the vault of the Islip chapel at Westminster Abbey on 15th March 2013. He was Chief Honorary Steward at the Abbey from 2002-2006. There is no marker.
He was the youngest son of Ralph Assheton, 1st Baron Clitheroe P.C. (died 1984), who held the post of High Steward of Westminster from 1962-84, and his wife Sylvia. Born on 23rd May 1934 he was educated at Eton and Christ Church Oxford and served in the Life Guards. He went into banking and was Deputy Chairman of Coutts Bank and became Treasurer and extra equerry to H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. On 20th February 1960 in the Abbey he married Jacqueline Harris (daughter of Arthur Harris, Marshal of the RAF) and they had one son and two daughters. He died on 27th November 2012 and his funeral was held in St Margaret's Westminster.
