As a composer with an acute interest in the theological reflections which underpin much of what he does, Sir James MacMillan tries here to account for this art form which religious and non-religious alike often refer to as 'the most spiritual of the arts'. He argues that the search for the sacred did not end with modernity in music and that, if anything, it has grown and become more complex.
