Nigel Harris, Senior Verger, St Margaret's Church

Nigel Harris

Senior Verger and Safeguarding Coordinator

Nigel Harris has been the Senior Verger at St Margaret’s since 2nd October 1988. As a child he was a chorister at St George’s Church Belfast, and has been involved in the Church from an early age. Before becoming a verger he was assistant manager and then relief manager for eight years at Skandia Restaurants, a group of nine family restaurants in Northern Ireland; he was also Dean’s Verger at St Anne’s Cathedral Belfast from 1986 – 1988.

St Margaret’s has been a big part of Nigel’s life, and has enabled him to meet people from all walks of life. Nigel regards his job as a vocation: to ensure that all the services and events at the church run smoothly, remembering that each event or service is special for those who attend, and that first impressions are important. He also acts as verger at services held in the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft in the Palace of Westminster, and in Westminster Abbey. Other duties include being Sexton of Westminster Abbey; and being a member of the Abbey’s salvage team and health and safety team.

In his leisure time, Nigel time enjoys studying history, and visiting stately homes and other cathedrals.
