Queen Alexandra, wife of Edward VII

Queen Alexandra was born on 1st December 1844, the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark.

Marriage

On 10th March 1863 she married at St George's Chapel, Windsor, Edward, Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VII.

Coronation

They were crowned together in the Abbey on 9th August 1902. The ceremony had to be postponed from June that year due to the King's operation for appendicitis.

Funeral

She died at Sandringham House in Norfolk on 20th November 1925 and her body lay in state in the church there until its removal to the Chapel Royal in St James' Palace. The first part of the burial service was held in Westminster Abbey and her coffin lay in state under the lantern tower near the High Altar. People filed through the Abbey to pay their respects and on the evening of the day following the funeral her body was removed to Windsor for burial.
