Lady Wood

Mary, a daughter of Sir Thomas Gardiner (Recorder of London and Attorney General) and his wife Rebecca (Child), was the second wife of Sir Henry Wood (died 1671), Baronet, of Loudham Hall in Suffolk. Henry was Clerk of the Board of Green Cloth, one of Queen Katherine's council and Treasurer to Queen Henrietta Maria (wife of Charles I). She was buried in Westminster Abbey on 1st April 1665 but has no marker or monument. The location in the burial register says "near the Convocation door". At this period the chapels of St Michael, St Andrew and St John the Evangelist were in use for the clergy of the Lower Convocation. So the door may have been in the north transept or the north ambulatory. Mary was a Maid of Honour to Henrietta Maria in Paris in 1650 and was married there in 1651. In 1662 she was one of four bedchamber women to Queen Catherine of Braganza, wife of Charles II. Her infant son Charles was buried in the Abbey in December 1662 and her daughter Mary on 16th November 1680. Daughter Mary married Charles Fitzroy, Duke of Southampton (later Duke of Cleveland) but had no children.
