James White, Captain of the Bellringers, St Margaret's Church, Westminster

James White

Secretary of the Belfry

James White is officially the “Secretary of the Belfry” at St Margaret’s Church, but is commonly known as the Tower Captain. He liaises with clergy and staff when ringing is required, particularly after special services and for state and Parliamentary occasions. James also organises ringers from the St Margaret’s Society of Change Ringers for each ringing occasion, up to forty times each year.

Whilst he was a student in London James learned to ring tower bells at Acton, W3; and handbells with a group at Imperial College. He rang his first quarter peals in 1994, and his first peal in 1996. James joined the St Margaret’s Society by taking part in the traditional ringing on New Year’s Eve 1996 and (early hours of) New Year’s Day 1997, and has taken part in the New Year’s Eve ringing every year since. James was appointed as Secretary of the Belfry in 2010.

James is an active member of the Middlesex County Association & London Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and frequently rings at churches in Central London. James is also a member of the band of ringers at the Curfew Tower, Windsor Castle. When he is not ringing, James runs his own chartered accountancy practice.
