Christopher Musgrave

Christopher Musgrave, Member of Parliament for Carlisle, was buried in the north transept of Westminster Abbey on 16th September 1718 but he has no monument or readable gravestone. His stone is just to the south of Gladstone and the inscription, now worn away, just gave his name and date of death.

He was born in Carlisle on 2nd July 1664, a son of Sir Christopher Musgrave by his first wife Mary (Cogan). He succeeded his brother Philip as Clerk of the Council and was one of the officers of the Ordnance for twenty five years. Philip married Mary Legge, daughter of Lord Dartmouth, in the Abbey on 12th November 1685 but died in 1689. Christopher died unmarried.
