Princess Amelia

Princess Amelia (often called Emily in England), was one of several children of George II and his wife Caroline to be buried with them in the Hanoverian vault below the central aisle of Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey. A small inscription was carved in the black and white pavement in 1866 and simply reads:

Amelia Sophia Eleonora 2 DA. of K.GEO. II 1786

She was born in Hanover in 1711 when George was Elector of Hanover and was very well educated in languages, enjoying fishing and horses, but she was thought to be very arrogant. Unmarried, she lived with her sister Caroline (buried in the vault in 1758). Her brothers George William died 1718, Frederick Prince of Wales died 1751 and William, Duke of Cumberland died 1765 are also buried in the vault with small stones as memorials in the pavement. Amelia was made Ranger of Richmond Park and caused controversy by trying to close parts of it. She died "of a consumption" at her house in Cavendish Square on 31 October 1786 and was buried on 11th November.
