Mortimer Sackler
In Henry VII's chapel Westminster Abbey is a small stained glass window for Dr Mortimer Sackler, physician and philanthropist, and his wife Theresa, generous donors to the Abbey's restoration appeal. It is by Alfred Fisher and was unveiled in 1995 on completion of the restoration of this chapel. The inscriptions are:
M & T Sackler family
Peace through Education
with various symbols reflecting his interests and the institutions he supported.
On the walls beside the steps up into this chapel are enamelled copper plates designed by Donald Buttress and painted by Kenneth Breese, 1999. One of these records the Sackler gift for the restoration, just giving their names. There are also plates to Robin Darling and to Christopher Mitchell, both UK Trustees for the Sackler Trust.
The Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation and The Sackler Trust were also generous donors to the new Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries in the Abbey triforium. Two donor windows can be seen there.
Dr Sackler was born in Brooklyn, USA in 1916 and was an eminent physician and gave generously to many artistic, educational and other causes in London, Oxford and abroad. His third wife was Theresa and he died in 2010, having been created an Honorary Knight of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
