Philip Herbert

Colonel Philip Herbert, his wife and two daughters are buried in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey. His gravestone inscription has now worn away but this read:

Here lyeth the body of the honourable Col. Philip Herbert, a younger son to James Herbert Esq. who was a younger son to Philip, Earl of Pembroke, who departed this life March 12th Anno. 1715/16 in the 51st year of his age

The inscription showed new and old style dating and the year is now what we call 1716. His father, the Honourable James Herbert, was the sixth son of Philip, 4th Earl of Pembroke. The Colonel's wife Marianne was buried with him on 2nd March 1718 aged 47. She was the only daughter of William Finch, Lord Maidstone ,son of the 2nd Earl of Winchelsea, and his wife Elizabeth (Windham). Several children were baptised at St Margaret's Westminster. Their daughter Elizabeth married firstly Edward Herbert and secondly James Jefferyes and she was buried on 9th November 1718. Daughter Marianne was married at St Bride's church in London to Robert Garrard and was buried aged 26 on 13th January 1723.

The Colonel's sister Penelope Herbert was baptised in St Margaret's Westminster on 2nd December 1651 and buried on 28th February 1655 in St Paul's chapel.
